What This Unit Is About

This Unit Includes:
6 Lessons | 2 – 4 weeks | All Ages (K–12) | Single-Subject | No Teacher’s Manual Required

This unit turns the outdoors into a living classroom, whether you’re in your backyard or deep in the wilderness.

Students study the science behind survival: combustion and fire behavior, water filtration systems, plant identification and botany, weather patterns, navigation, and basic first aid. Every skill is paired with the “why” behind it, so students understand the principles that make each technique work.

You’ll practice:
• Cooking with soup can stoves
• Fire building and safety
• Water filtration methods
• Identifying edible vs. poisonous plants
• Flint and steel techniques
• Tent setup and gear knowledge
• Compass navigation and route planning
• Lost-response strategy and emergency basics
• Weather awareness, star navigation, and more

We also guide you in planning for meaningful family time… because the memories made around a campfire can last a lifetime.

This unit is flexible. You can camp in your living room, your backyard, or at a national park. However you do it, the goal is the same: togetherness, confidence, and wonder.
If you’re just getting started, or want a refresh with the whole family, we’ve got you covered.

A note about this unit:
This is an intentionally focused, single-subject unit designed to stand on its own.  It is one of our first, so it will be structured differently.

High school families may document this unit as shown on the course coverage/transcript/credit tabs above.

What Kind of Unit Is This

This is a Mini Unit, designed for the whole family to use together, whether you have one student or many. It includes 6 flexible lessons, typically stretched over 2 – 4 weeks (depending on your pace).

Most families complete 6–8 units per year. Think of one unit like a single “chapter” in a year-long curriculum.

This isn’t one-lesson-per-day curriculum. Each lesson may span multiple days. You set the rhythm.  This is one of our older units.  As such, it is set up differently.

Print or PDF?

Every unit is delivered as a PDF digital download, so you can start instantly. Prefer a printed book? You can get that, too! Want to understand all your print options? Flip to the “Print or Digital” page in our BROCHURE for a full breakdown of how to access print copies.

What You’ll Receive

There are three digital guidebooks:

  • Growing/Advanced combo Guidebook (elementary through middle school)

This is one of our older units.  As such, it is set up differently.

What Is Not Included

This is intentionally designed to mimic higher-level education and real-world learning. You won’t find a separate teacher’s manual or student workbook because we don’t believe in busywork. Instead, each guidebook is written directly to the student (and the parent learning alongside) with real instruction, interactive prompts, and a flow that mirrors real-life, higher-level learning.

You’ll see natural cues like “Do this now,” “Write this in your notebook,” and “Pause to discuss,” built right into the lesson. Students learn through notebooking, narration, dictation, and hands-on exploration—no pre-planning required. It might feel different at first. That’s because it is… and it’s intentional.

Core Connections

There is not a Core Connections Companion with this unit.

LINKS Page + Audio Add-Ons

Each unit includes access to our private LINKS page with videos, supply lists, book lists, and bonus resources—everything pre-screened and organized for easy use. Some units also have optional MP3 add-ons for auditory learners.

This was a great unit! We did it over the summer and learned so much! My boys enjoyed learning about how to build a fire especially. We ended the unit doing a family camp out in our backyard. The boys built the tent, helped prep the campfire, and they also made sure to pack their camping bags correctly. Thank you campfire for such a fun summer themed unit!

Students may also explore introductory meteorology, topography, and survival strategies.

Physical Education (Outdoor Fitness & Skills):
The curriculum involves physical activity through hiking, setting up camp, and practical survival tips.  Students develop motor coordination, endurance, and teamwork through structured outdoor tasks such as fire-building and navigation.
