The phenomenon of magma rising and eventually erupting as lava is a complex interplay of temperature, pressure, and the chemical composition of the Earth’s mantle and crust.
Maya pressed her face against the cold bus window as the mountain came into view.
Her teacher had called it a “geologic formation” in class: a rupture in the Earth’s crust. From here, it just looked like a mountain, quiet and still.
It wasn’t until she saw the thin curl of smoke rising from the peak that she remembered what lived underneath it.
Deep below that calm surface, rock was melting. Magma, her teacher had called it: molten rock trapped beneath the crust, building pressure the way steam builds in a closed pot.
The crust above it was cracked, she knew, and somewhere in that mountain was a conduit, an opening that ran all the way down to the heat.
She watched the smoke and thought about all that pressure, temperature, and chemical energy churning in the dark, and she wondered what it would take for the mountain to finally stop pretending it was ordinary.
Same facts, but now the student can retain them differently. This is a simplistic example to illustrate the underlying pedagogy.
