CAMPFIRE STANDARDS:
Our units are taught through living book format. They are applicable to all age levels, pre-reader to adult. If you would like to see how we adjust each level for difficulty (while allowing the whole family to come together), please visit this page HERE.
UNIT DESCRIPTION:
This is unlike ANY other Titanic book, unit study, curriculum, movie, or museum out there. You may think you know the story of April 14th, 1912, but just like those who first stepped onto this grand ship in England, your voyage is only beginning. Settle in to your stateroom, savor the fine meals of first class dining, tap your foot to an Irish tune in steerage, and keep a lookout for ice from the crow’s nest. ALL ABOARD for your trip on….the Titanic! Whether you’re passionate about Titanic or know nothing about it, this is the unit of ALL units. As cliche as that sounds, you guys know we mean it because we have never made a claim like that before.
This is the one that can take your “history hater” and turn them into wanting to become a historian. It’s one that will bring your entire family together, while sparking the richest discussions about ethics, critical thinking, morals, and TRUTH. It’s one that “Dad” will love to lead! It has a living story that is captivating; it has interactive teaching; it has a board game included (we thought that was more fun than a quiz); it has food with input from chefs; it has experiential learning; it has real quotes from real survivors… and it’s basically no prep and open-and-go. It is Titanic, Campfire style!
This is the unit that teaches your family the importance of deciphering between truth, untruth, and half-truth. It’s the unit that teaches empathy. This unit guides your family through the process of drawing that line separating fact and fiction, just as a historian would. Even in today’s world, we must know how to determine whether to trust what we hear, or challenge its credibility…..all while carrying you back into the early 1900’s, allowing you to practically feel the cold night air along with the people who were on the majestic Titanic.
It is jam-packed with social studies, geography, and history—from the Potato Famine to immigration and Irish history… and of course the history of one of the most well-known nights in the world. It is just as full of science, as you go from learning about the science of the mind and witness testimony to buoyancy and water displacement, to photo mosaics (NASA style). You will even be creating your own icebergs, ships, and more… all with items from around the house!
You’re wearing your best dinner jacket…. the string quartet is filling the evening air with chords…. the Atlantic is flat calm…. the crew is busying about…. come join us on…. the Titanic.
CORE CONNECTIONS COMPANION:
This can be used as core curriculum (with Core Connections) or as an extracurricular (without Core Connections).
HISTORY FOCUS: The job of a historian, time period focus: 1850s – 1920s
GEOGRAPHY FOCUS: England, Ireland, and America
SOCIAL STUDIES FOCUS: Irish immigration
SCIENCE FOCUS: Physics, Applied science, scientific inquiry
LANGUAGE ARTS PROJECT: Journalism (grammar emphasis: conjunctive adverbs, run-on, semicolons, commas, apostrophes)
PAGE COUNT: 225 (GROWING/ADVANCED), 17 (EARLY LEARNER)
AUDIO DETAILS:
The audio recording will consist of the main lesson portions of the Growing and Advanced guidebooks (black font). This is all of the main lesson content. This recording will obviously not include things like activity directions, “notes to parents,” different-colored font in the side bar (which is for independent study), or optional SYW pages.
How to purchase if you have a Campfire Credit Currency balance:
Some customers have built up Campfire Credit Currencies from prior summer sales. Our system does not allow combined “Credit Currency” and “debit card” payments. Since the audio recording cannot be purchased with a credit currency, you will need to do separate transactions or your debit card will be charged for the full balance of whatever is in your cart at checkout. As such, you would merely purchase the regular units with your Campfire Currency (if you haven’t already), and then purchase the audio download individually, as a separate transaction with your debit card.
Required for Audio:
You are only able to purchase the individual audio recording if you have already purchased the unit. The audio recording is intended to be used along WITH the unit. Otherwise, you will miss the visuals (like maps and graphs, which aid in teaching), any associated Cool Teacher Moments, the special side boxes, definition boxes, etc! We will still have little “beeps” throughout the recording to get your attention for when to look at the guidebook for note taking, but those are intended as helpful guides. We do not recommend listening to the recording without following along in the guidebook, especially for aid in memory retention and understanding.

This unit was a true living book that walked us through the experiences of the many different groups aboard the Titanic. We learned so much together! We also deeply appreciated the Core Connections. The science activities brought the challenges of the Titanic home. The Journalism focus for language arts was broken up into doable activities that were an interesting peek at journalism.

We love all Campfire Unit Studies, but this is the one so far.. that my boys say is their absolute favorite! They still talk about all they learned! They really enjoyed the audio as an added touch to it as well. Never have I seen them so engaged in writing! They loved learning about newspapers and writing articles about the Titanic Marconi officers they chose to research. We had an amazing Titanic dinner with friends who bought and were using the Titanic unit too. They all dressed as their character and spoke about themselves. My boys even did theirs in their best British accent! They also made a Titanic board game that we play often. We are now counting down the days to go to the PF Titanic Museum this fall! Thank you for another amazing unit!
