What Kind of Unit Is This?
Campfire units have changed and grown a lot over the years! Price reflects unit length, depth, and format.
Flexible units
Choose from two open-and-go flexible formats:
- Rich, all-in-one units with cross-curricular subjects included—shorter in duration
(best for parents who want a full Campfire program in less time). - Single-subject electives for focused, multi-week or semester-style study
(perfect for students looking for a specific elective, like Financial Stewardship). - Approx. 100–200 pages of teaching content, activities, and student support
One purchase covers your whole family
$25 - $32 per unit
Classic units
Classic units are complete, open-and-go Campfire studies from our original catalog, with multi-subject Core Connections support included, in a gentler format.
- Cross-curricular teaching content and student activities (all-in-one, except math)
- Written with a streamlined sentence structure and writing style. Multi-age depth, with a different voice.
- Approx. 150–200 pages of teaching content, activities, and student support
One purchase covers your whole family
$37 per unit
Signature units
A complete, open-and-go Campfire study with a full Core Connections Companion—our most expanded, organized cross-curricular resource.
- Full main unit + separate, comprehensive Core Connections Companion (interdisciplinary and cross-curricular all-in-one--no math)
- Approx. 200–300+ pages of teaching content
One purchase covers your whole family
$47 per unit
~8 units per year = 1 full credit in each core subject:
Each unit with Core Connections provides partial credit in all of the following:
Think of each unit as an extra large chapter within a full-year curriculum. Complete ~8 units, and you will have a full credit in each (US Carnegie Unit: ~120 hours per subject = 1 full credit). Since Campfire teaches multiple subjects in one unit, each one gives you a “chapter” in multiple school subjects.
What's Included
Your whole family is covered in a single purchase, with all guidebooks included. Details about this specific unit, including course coverage and transcript help, are listed below in the accordion.
Understand our Narrative Approach
Lessons are written like a guided story or conversation, the way a great teacher would explain them out loud.
A dry version might sound like this
A volcano represents a remarkable geologic formation characterized by an opening, or rupture, within the Earth’s crust.
This breach serves as a conduit for magma, molten rock stored beneath the Earth’s surface, to escape into the atmosphere.
The phenomenon of magma rising and eventually erupting as lava is a complex interplay of temperature, pressure, and the chemical composition of the Earth’s mantle and crust.
A narrative version might sound like this
Maya pressed her face against the cold bus window as the mountain came into view.
Her teacher had called it a “geologic formation” in class: a rupture in the Earth’s crust. From here, it just looked like a mountain, quiet and still.
It wasn’t until she saw the thin curl of smoke rising from the peak that she remembered what lived underneath it.
Deep below that calm surface, rock was melting. Magma, her teacher had called it: molten rock trapped beneath the crust, building pressure the way steam builds in a closed pot.
The crust above it was cracked, she knew, and somewhere in that mountain was a conduit, an opening that ran all the way down to the heat.
She watched the smoke and thought about all that pressure, temperature, and chemical energy churning in the dark, and she wondered what it would take for the mountain to finally stop pretending it was ordinary.
Same facts, but now the student can retain them differently. This is a simplistic example to illustrate the underlying pedagogy.
How It Works
1. Everyone opens a guidebook that matches their age and reads together. One purchase gives you everything to cover your family. Often, the parent prefers to read, or students can take turns. You do not make multiple purchases or choose levels.Families may choose to share a guidebook, depending on their preferences. This is common among those who like to screencast instead of print.
2. Grab a blank notebook or paper for note-taking (as guided in the lessons).
3. Set a timer. Example:
- ~30 minutes for a single subject
- ~a few hours for a full school day (all subjects except math, with breaks)
Some lessons will take longer or shorter, just as textbook chapters vary in length.
