CAMPFIRE STANDARDS:

UNIT DESCRIPTION:

“With the Skills of: A Gardener–Square Foot Gardening” will bring your family into the world of growing vegetables, herbs, and more… regardless if you live in an apartment, RV, or have a 100-acre farm!  This unit covers SO MUCH in science, health, faith, family connection, nature studies, and more….

By utilizing scientific research and farming principles, this style of raised-bed gardening can be done from literally anywhere.  You will actually be creating a raised bed garden throughout this unit (lesson 12 is planting day), while learning (in Charlotte Mason style) about butterflies, bees, health benefits, composting tips and tricks from the experts, worms, self-sustainability, and so many more surprises including a planner and journals.

Grab your family and get ready for this experience of growing your own food from home!  With hand-holding we received from our contributors (skilled gardeners and farmers who have done both traditional gardening and square foot gardening in numerous states across the US), we help you to be able to create your own garden along with your family, as they will each play a unique part in this amazing process.  Grow closer together as a family as you grow your own food… in the smallest amount of space possible.

CORE CONNECTIONS COMPANION:

This can be used as core curriculum (with Core Connections) or as an extracurricular (without Core Connections). To see what is covered in each unit, go HERE.

DIFFERENCES FROM THE NORM:

This is one of our older units, so it is separated into five guidebooks instead of three. [pre-reader, elementary, middle school, high school, adult –vs– Early Learner, Growing Learner, Advanced Learner].  We better streamlined the guidebooks (formerly called “journals”) as we went along.

*Please note, this has our older format for Core Connections.  If you want to see what our current units Core Connections are like, please view our Samples page.*

PAGE COUNT: 130 (ELEMENTARY – ADULT), 32 (PRE-READER)

This was our first Campfire unit and we are now fully devoted fans! (Student ages 7-15)

This unit took us from zero gardening experience to now having four separate 3×3 square-foot garden beds (one for each of our children) that were confidently built, planned, filled, and planted by my kids. I chose this over another publisher’s botany study that we had intended to do, and I am glad we did. Note this unit does *not* take a deep dive into the science of botany, yet I feel like it was easily added in as we discussed things and researched our gardens. (It does explain the science, just not much beyond photosynthesis and soil/nutrients.) Just be mindful to plan ahead if that is your desire.

Instead we were guided into a practical, hands-on learning experience that will benefit us in more tangible ways. Not to mention my children, who had zero desire to work outside to grow our own food, actively participated in every part of this and I’ve never seen them work so hard to prepare.

Worked great for us as a spring stand-alone unit to breathe fresh air into our tired school, or I imagine it would make a fantastic companion to an in-depth botany study to round out a more rigorous plant/ag science focus.
