UNIT DESCRIPTION:

Step into the world of those who throw caution to the wind… literally.  Storm chasers aren’t just “cowboys” or “adrenaline junkies.”  They are our early warning system.  They keep everyone safe.  Tornadoes, hurricanes, derechoes, blizzards…. but it’s not just based on guesses and gut instincts.  It’s based on science…. the science of meteorology.  So come with us into a unit cram-packed with activity options, atmospheric science, physics, chemistry, language arts AND history (never thought you’d say that, right? who knew that a tornado saved Washington and that the first storm chasers were created amidst world wars?)….

With a splash of adrenaline, you can cover all of your school subjects, have a place for dad to join in (if he wants) and get some true understanding into the world of meteorology and storm chasing.

As we wrote in the introduction to the unit: “…whether you are the person afraid of the storm, or the person racing to catch up to one… you are in good company.  Hero? Scientist? Thrill Seeker?  Filled with fear?  Come with us; this unit is for you.”

This was the first campfire curriculum unit we tried and my boys loved it. I have a dyslexic son and the multisensory activities and videos built in were great for him and his older brother loved it too. There is a faith talk at the end of every lesson, as a secular homeschooler it was easy for me to skip that section, unlike other curriculum where religion is so interwoven you can’t use it. I appreciated the think tank section which had solid philosophical questions that brought about some great discussions. We bought 3 more units and can’t wait to start.

This was one of our favorite units! Wonderful way to understand weather and how God’s world works.

Amazing! I cannot believe the amount that our family learned through this unit. It is fantastic. We did this study 8 months ago and our children still will make comments about what they learned in this study. I was wondering if the study was too information heavy for my 8, 10, and 11 year olds, but when I tried to divide a lesson into two parts (thinking it would be helpful with memory retention), my children insisted that I finish the lesson because they were enjoying it so much. My daughter who was 3 at the time keeps asking me to make her atmosphere cake again, and every time she hears the word atmosphere she gives me the definition of what atmosphere is. haha.
